For a few days in May 2009, the lazy horse carriages that line the legendary Marrakech Wall made room for the adrenaline of race cars, flying past at full throttle in a blur of color and sound! It was the inaugural Race of Morocco featuring FIA World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCC) that took to the streets of Marrakech on a D3-designed temporary street circuit in the heart of the red city.
Morocco had not known an event of such scale since its 1958 F1 Grand Prix in Casablanca, and the locals embraced this event turning on in the tens of thousands to cheer on Moroccan driver Mehdi Bennani.
Eurosport broadcasted this event to more than 112 million households across 59 countries delivering massive media exposure for the event, its sponsors and partners. With the Atlas Mountain Ranges as a backdrop this event was visually spectacular, and offered international visitors an unparalleled racing and cultural experience.
D3’s pinnacle of construction in Marrakech was the installation of the custom designed temporary pit building. Comprising of 3 levels this steel structure was manufactured by D3 Industries and was installed in the Marrakech Grand Prix paddock area.
The 162m long structure has 5000 square meters of hospitality space, providing plenty of first-class corporate suites. The ground floor is dedicated to team garages, while an independently standing, four level control tower housed the operational hub of the event.
